🤍 🤍 - Most C and C programmers know the conventions for distributing declarations and definitions among headers and source files. However, there are exceptions to these conventions that we often chalk up to “linker magic”. If the linker can’t deal with multiply-defined symbols, how does it handle inline and constexpr functions? Why do explicit template specializations go into source files when most template code goes into headers? And what can embedded developers do to tell the linker to map certain code and data into specific memory regions? This session answers these questions by taking a detailed look at how the traditional C/C build model works with headers and source files. It describes what happens during each stage of the build process: preprocessing, compiling, instantiation, and linking. It explains what information the compiler records from declarations and definitions – including exceptional cases like inline and templates – and how the linker uses that information to generate an executable. It also shows how you can use explicit instantiation to control memory layout and reduce build times. Finally, this session walks an example program through the entire build process to demonstrate how everything fits together. This is not a session on C20 Modules. However, it explains terms such as “translation unit” and “linkage” that are also part of the Modules framework, providing a solid foundation for understanding Modules. - Ben Saks - Videos Streamed & Edited by Digital Medium: 🤍 Register Now For CppCon 2022: 🤍

Cross compiling for arm or aarch64 on Debian or Ubuntu

In this video I'll explain how to do cross compiling for arm or aarch64 on Debian or Ubuntu. To make the resulting binaries portable, I'll also cover static linking. It’s not always possible to build directly ARM-based devices, especially when they are limited in resources. The majority of build and developer machines are still on x86 and by using a cross compiler, it is possible to build binaries or executables usable on another architecture. For example, to use your standard PC, most likely x86, to build something that is usable on another machine or device that’s on another architecture, for example 32 bit or 64 bit ARM. Contents: - Theoretical explanation for cross compilation - Cross compile of a basic C program for ARM aarch64 - Cross compilation with configure and make (strace) - Static linking and advantages/disadvantages - Cross compiling for ARM using musl (tcpdump). All info discussed and shown in the video can be found well-documented on my blog, jensd.be, as well. For this video: 🤍

GHC compiles Haskell via Core, a tiny intermediate language based closely on the lambda calculus. Almost all GHC’s optimisations happen in Core, but until recently there was an important kind of optimisation that Core really did not handle well. In this talk, you will learn what the problem was, and how Core’s new “join points” solve it simply and beautifully, by effectively allowing Core to express control flow as well as data flow; there are strong links to so-called “continuation passing style” (CPS) here. On the way, you will explore how GHC’s Mighty Simplifier, which is responsible for many optimisations, works. Understanding join points can help you are a programmer too, because you can write code confident that it will optimise well. You will discover a rather compelling example this: “skip-less streams” now fuse well, for the first time, which allows us to drop the previous (ingenious but awkward) workarounds. This talk was recorded on 12 October 2017 in London at Haskell eXchange 2017

Compiling Word for Windows from OS/2 1.2

Twitter: 🤍 Discord: 🤍 - In this episode of studying ancient code bases, our valliant host tortures himself through trying to compile Word for Windows 1.1a. Originally released in 1989, Word for Windows would eventually take over as the domiant word processing solution from the late 90s to today. In 2014, Microsoft donated the source code of Word for Windows 1.1a to the Computer History Museum (🤍 who has made it available on their website. While a few people have compiled Winword from source, no one that I could find has tried to build it using the OS/2 version of the tools. For various reasons, trying to build it under DOS is an exercise of frustration, and I strongly suspect Microsoft developed on top of OS/2 extensively for multiple reasons. Through the course of this journey, I learned quite a bit of just how Microsoft made their software, some unusual and previously undocumented finds, and deeper mysteries. For example, did you know that Word for Windows isn't compiled to native machine language? Instead it's compiled to P-Code. This is the second entry on preserving and compiling retro-codebases, and documenting the things I find as go along. Applied WebAssembly: Compiling and Running C++ in Your Web Browser - Ben Smith - CppCon 2019

🤍 Discussion & Comments: 🤍 Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: 🤍 — Applied WebAssembly: Compiling and Running C in Your Web Browser WebAssembly is a new technology in all modern browsers designed to let you run high-performance code. Maybe you've heard of WebAssembly before, read an article or two, or even tried to use it with your software project. Since WebAssembly is a low-level language, it's easy to get bogged down in the technical details, and leave without knowing whether WebAssembly will be useful for you. In this talk, I'll take a top-down approach, showing a real problem and how WebAssembly can help. From August to December this year, I'll be teaching C to students at Morehouse College. Having a tool like Compiler Explorer is invaluable as a teaching aid, since it allows the students to immediately see C compilation results, on any device that has a web browser. But Compiler Explorer and tools like it require a server to do compilation, so they're hard to use offline. With WebAssembly, we can run the compiler client-side, in the browser, no server required. First, I'll show how I ported the clang compiler and linker to WebAssembly. Since Clang 8 supports WebAssembly as a compilation target, we can even run the resulting executable sandboxed in the browser. Next, we'll dive into how Clang compiles C constructs into WebAssembly. Finally, we'll look at some of the new WebAssembly features in development. — Ben Smith Ben Smith is a Software Engineer at Google, on the WebAssembly team. His primary work involves adding new features to V8, Chrome's JavaScript and WebAssembly engine. He's also the chair of the WebAssembly Community and Working Groups, where he helps move new features forward. From August to December 2019, he will be teaching introductory C classes at Morehouse University, as part of the Google-in-Residence program. — Videos Filmed & Edited by Bash Films: 🤍 *-* Register Now For CppCon 2022: 🤍 *-*
