The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole combat aircraft that is intended to perform both air superiority and strike missions. It is also able to provide electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. Lockheed Martin is the prime F-35 contractor, with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The aircraft has three main variants: the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) F-35A, the short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) F-35B, and the carrier-based (CV/CATOBAR) F-35C. The aircraft descends from the Lockheed Martin X-35, which in 2001 beat the Boeing X-32 to win the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. Its development is principally funded by the United States, with additional funding from program partner countries from NATO and close U.S. allies, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Italy, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and formerly Turkey. Several other countries have ordered, or are considering ordering, the aircraft. The program has drawn much scrutiny and criticism for its unprecedented size, complexity, ballooning costs, and much-delayed deliveries. The acquisition strategy of concurrent production of the aircraft while it was still in development and testing led to expensive design changes and retrofits. The F-35 first flew in 2006 and entered service with the U.S. Marine Corps F-35B in July 2015, followed by the U.S. Air Force F-35A in August 2016 and the U.S. Navy F-35C in February 2019. The aircraft was first used in combat in 2018 by the Israeli Air Force. The U.S. plans to buy 2,456 F-35s through 2044, which will represent the bulk of the crewed tactical aviation of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps for several decades; the aircraft will be a cornerstone of NATO and U.S.-allied air power and is expected to operate until 2070. The F-35 was the product of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program, which was the merger of various combat aircraft programs from the 1980s and 1990s. One progenitor program was the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Advanced Short Take-Off/Vertical Landing (ASTOVL) which ran from 1983 to 1994; ASTOVL aimed to develop a Harrier Jump Jet replacement for the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and the U.K. Royal Navy. Under one of ASTOVL's classified programs, the Supersonic STOVL Fighter (SSF), Lockheed Skunk Works conducted research for a stealthy supersonic STOVL fighter intended for both U.S. Air Force (USAF) and USMC; a key technology explored was the shaft-driven lift fan (SDLF) system. Lockheed's concept was a single-engine canard delta aircraft weighing about 24,000 lb (11,000 kg) empty. ASTOVL was rechristened as the Common Affordable Lightweight Fighter (CALF) in 1993 and involved Lockheed, McDonnell Douglas, and Boeing. In 1993, the Joint Advanced Strike Technology (JAST) program emerged following the cancellation of the USAF's Multi-Role Fighter (MRF) and U.S. Navy's (USN) Advanced Fighter-Attack (A/F-X) programs. MRF, a program for a relatively affordable F-16 replacement, was scaled back and delayed due to post–Cold War defense posture easing F-16 fleet usage and thus extending its service life as well as increasing budget pressure from the F-22 program. The A/F-X, initially known as the Advanced-Attack (A-X), began in 1991 as the USN's follow-on to the Advanced Tactical Aircraft (ATA) program for an A-6 replacement; the ATA's resulting A-12 Avenger II had been canceled due to technical problems and cost overruns in 1991. In the same year, the termination of the Naval Advanced Tactical Fighter (NATF), an offshoot of USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program to replace the F-14, resulted in additional fighter capability being added to A-X, which was then renamed A/F-X. Amid increased budget pressure, the Department of Defense's (DoD) Bottom-Up Review (BUR) in September 1993 announced MRF's and A/F-X's cancellations, with applicable experience brought to the emerging JAST program. The search for a Stealth fighter that can take off and land in tight confines has lasted decades. Lockheed Martin began developing experimental "vertical rising" fighters as early as 1954. This project evolved from the The Joint Strike Fighter J S F programmed which involved 14 countries and was the focus of the Department of Defense to develop a cost-effective, next-generation strike aircraft weapon system for the US Navy and Air Force. The Harrier was one such aircraft that had achieved this engineering feat. it’s technology was ahead of its time, but it has its flaws like every engineering marvel. During vertical landing, it would turn over multiple times due to turbulence from its own downwash. On the tip of each wing, included a small roll control nozzle which had to be controlled manually by the pilot to stabilize the aircraft for safe landing. However, the F35B Short Take Off and Vertical Landing system, STOVL was an improvement, combining vertical landing with long-range supersonic speed, resulting in a stealthy, lightning-fast fighter capable of carrying modern weaponry. Compare news coverage. Spot media bias. Avoid algorithms. Be well informed. Download the free Ground News app at 🤍 In the first 10 years of operation. the F-16 was costing the American Taxpayer around 18 million per airframe. 143 had been destroyed, and 71 of its pilots were dead. The A-10, 17.2 million per airframe, 59 had been destroyed and 26 had died through miss-identified friendly fire incidents. The F-35, at 50 million per airframe has now been flying for 15 years, and is one of the most controversial planes in existence. Critics constantly cite it's spiraling costs. And yet, in 15 years of flying the F-35 has lost 4 airframes, and killed one pilot, making it one of the safest planes flying today. But if so why is the plane so controversial? In this video we briefly examine the Woozle effect, the effect by which the media, and those that cite the media, simply quote each other as a source without ever truly fact checking if what they publish is genuine or not, and have, for years, been unintentionally broadcasting Russian propaganda as factual claims about Americas new fighter jet. Combat aviation is one of the key ways to deter unwanted guests. And advanced fighters, in turn, allow you to gain significant air superiority over the enemy. Today we’ll be telling you about the latest modification to the most coveted fighter for US partners - the F-35 Lightning II.
For the first time in history, American F-35 Joint Strike Fighters had at least one close encounter with China’s 5th-generation J-20 over the Pacific, and the response from Air Force officials has been somewhat mixed. While the commander of Pacific Air Forces described the Chinese fighter itself as “nothing to lose sleep over,” he qualified his dismissive statements with positive observations about how Chinese forces are operating their first stealth aircraft. With a price tag of just over $100 million, the F-35B from Lockheed Martin is equipped with the most powerful engine of any jet in the world, as well as the most advanced sensor suite of any fighter jet in history. The Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina, is the sole location for the training required to fly this unique plane. This training is focused on teaching pilots how to perform short-distance takeoffs and how to land the plane vertically like a helicopter. Pilots also learn to master technology and utilize gear unique to the jet. In March, Insider was granted exclusive access to the Air Station, where we observed these pilots in training. Stealth fighters like America’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and F-22 Raptor are often touted as being “invisible on radar,” but they’re actually not invisible at all. In fact, all of today’s modern stealth fighters, including China’s J-20 and Russia’s Su-57, are pretty easy to spot on even dated early warning systems that have been in service for decades. Stealth designs minimize an aircraft’s radar signature, delaying and sometimes even preventing detection, but because of the physical requirements for tactical jets, stealth fighters can be easily spotted by certain low-frequency radar bands. 📱 Follow Sandboxx News on social Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 TikTok: 🤍 📱 Follow Alex Hollings on social Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 TikTok: 🤍 Further Reading: Original article: 🤍 Comparing stealth fighters: 🤍 Hasard's F-117 shootdown analysis: 🤍 Radar Absorbent Materials: 🤍 Why is stealth so hard?: 🤍 Citations: The Radar Game: 🤍 Integrated Review of Stealth Technology: 🤍
