I recommend using a sanding block to try to remove any urine damage to wooden shelves that have already been stained! The Official Chinchilla Care Series See timestamps below for individual segments! “What kind of cages should chinchillas live in, and what goes inside them? What kinds of bedding should I use? And where do I get all this stuff?” All your cage related questions for owning chinchillas are answered in this cute, concise video being the second of our care series by the one and only Chinpals. Some general points: 1. A chinchilla’s cage should be quite large with plenty of things to jump to and from, interact with, hide in, and sleep in! 2. Our favorite cages are the Midwest Double Unit Ferret Nation and Critter Nation cages, which can be found on Amazon for about $300-350. 3. Plastic should never be inside a chinchilla cage since they can (and will) chew and swallow it! Instead, opt for untreated KD pine and poplar, metal, fleece, or tile furnishings for ledges, toys, and shelving. 4. Large, metal wheels like Silver Surfers or Chin Spins are great for giving your chinchilla access to exercise all the time! Remember, they must be at least 14" diameter, not plastic, no wire or mesh, and no bar in the center! 5. Unfortunately pet stores carry many things that are NOT safe for chins which is why we recommend so many online shops like Whimsy’s Menagerie, NOLA Chin Rescue, and Etsy shops like Pandamonium Pets or Woodnstuffga. 6. Fleece can be found at fabric stores like JoAnn (or premade chinny shops like ChinChic) if you want to sew your own liners or hammocks! Remember to change and wash fleece liners frequently since fleece breeds bacteria quickly. 7. Shavings (KD pine or aspen) are my choice of bedding since it can be spot cleaned, but keep in mind it’s expensive and messy. 8. Tiles are very easy to wipe clean and encourage litter box use. They are great for keeping cool (though not replacing AC) and can make a good cage flooring. 9. Cage cleaners we like are 50:50 white distilled vinegar and water, or Nature’s Miracle Small Pet Cage Cleaner. 10. Shop vacs messes like dust, hay, and shavings way better than a regular vacuum! Hi guys! We wanted to share a more in depth video of how I start the day, every day, with the Chinpals. Remember, this is just basic care, and even though it may seem like I'm going above and beyond for them, daily cleaning and maintenance is absolutely necessary. Now, having a whole room for them, the shop vac, the shelving, the Ruggable Rug, etc, those are human extravagances that are definitely not necessary, but sure are helpful! Like I said at the end of the video, taking care of chinchillas is not extraordinarily difficult, but it does last for 15+ years; and with a pet who isn't even that affectionate! I think a lot of people are perfectly fine vacuuming up poops every day, but the fact is, chins don't really want to snuggle! Ask yourself before getting a chin: "Am I okay with an expensive, high maintenance pet that doesn't want much to do with me, for the next 15-20 years?" Some general points: 1. A chinchilla’s diet should be very bland: pure pellets (no mix-ins) and fresh timothy hay 2. The brands Oxbow and Mazuri are excellent for pellets, and Oxbow, Standlee, and Small Pet Select are our favorites for timothy hay. 3. Limit treats to one small piece a day, or less; chins don’t need treats in their diet, and less is always better! 4. Avoid treats with nuts, seeds, fruits and veggies (dried or fresh), high fat, and sugar. 5. Good easy to find treats are plain cheerios, plain oats, and unfrosted mini wheats. 6. The best water bottles are glass with a spout and ball/spring, we like Lixit and Oxbow bottles! 7. Use purified water instead of tap to reduce the chances of giardia. 8. Clean your bottles once a week, and make sure you change the water in the bottles roughly every other day! 9. Whimsy's Menagerie, NOLA Chin Rescue, and Pandamonium Pets are excellent resources for safe treats, toys, and chews!
